A decedent and elegant classic French pastry, the mille crepe cake is the embodiment of overachiever in the cake family. A single layer is not enough. We need 20! Yup, 20 layers, all individually browned, then stacked, each layer paper thin and separated with a brush of French pastry cream. The word mille feuille means “a thousand sheets, layers, or leaves,” implying the many layers of crepes giving this no-bake cake its distinct and memorable texture. It takes real effort to create, but tastes absolutely divine when made right. We combed through KL looking for the best mille crepe cakes this bustling city has to offer and here are our top picks!
Tucked neatly in a corner lot of the Happy Mansion apartments, this familiar, thriving café, has come a long way. Unbeknownst to many, Food Foundry is home to one of the best mille crepe cakes in KL. Home-made crepes layered in between fresh Cream Fraiche, Food Foundry has succeeded in creating taste and texture perfection. We tried the Strawberry Pastarom, a delightful piece of pastry with freshly made strawberry jam infused cream to layer between the crepes, topped with an enormous piece of the fresh fruit itself. Not too sweet, this delectable treat was a pleasure to indulge in. The best-seller here, the Almond Salted Caramel had light, melt-in-your-mouth smooth layers, crafted beautifully to produce the most magnificent of mille crepe textures. Its salted caramel toppings enhanced and complimented the flavour of the crepe and cream layers, making it a brilliant dessert experience you’ll definitely remember.

Discover this cosy café on the mezzanine level of Avenue K. With a décor straight out of a 1940s movie, this pork-free, no-alcohol establishment is popular with working adults and travellers around KL for a convenient and satisfying sweet treat. With comfortable seats and a relaxed atmosphere, this is a great place in the heart of the city to settle down with a book or a friend for a quiet, relaxed evening. The crepe cakes here may look simple, but take a bite and see the wonders that this Japanese-Western café has to offer. Light and delicious with crisply layered texture, the three flavours we tried were scrumptious, and substantially creamier than the rest of the crepe cakes we had. They were the Matcha, Tiramisu, and Vanilla. Try the Tiramisu for a coffee imbued dessert, and for something mild, the Matcha is perfect for a yummy treat, any time of the day. If you visit from 3pm to 6pm, Mondays to Fridays, you can get any slice of cake with a coffee or tea for just RM19.90.

Priding themselves of the authenticity of this delicate French pastry, this venerable brand deserves a whole lot of respect. From hardworking chefs slaving away on the hand-made paper thin pancake sheets, to the freshness of the Parisian whipping cream that alternates in between, to the striking texture of the cakes and its incredible deliciousness, Vanilla Café has it all. Placing a true emphasis on each cake’s quality, all ingredients are imported and halal certified, and all 30 layers of the cake made with the love and passion. Our absolute favourite, the Vanilla was absolutely divine. Melt-in-your-mouth smooth texture, the vanilla flavoured pancake sheets blended perfectly with the cream. This truly is the embodiment of love at first bite. Trust me, you’re going to get seconds, and thirds, heck just buy a whole cake, you’re definitely going to finish it. Another noteworthy mention, the Bamboo Charcoal, was extraordinary as well. A crisp texture, with the perfect sweetness level, this this the epitome of mille crepe cake decadence. Its rustic and cosy interior with furniture cleverly fashioned out of classic foot-peddled sewing tables emits a fascinating retro vibe. Bean bags are strewn around for that comfortable recline while the upbeat, fun tunes help you unwind. The mille crepe cakes here made with French cream definitely topped our list. We tried four flavours, each of them so good, it’s difficult to pick a favourite. The Ferrero Roche was definitely the best chocolate themed mille crepe cake we’ve tried. Deliciously decadent, its layers of chocolatey goodness is definitely one you don’t want to miss. The Apple Crumble was equally as magnificent! The fresh flavour of this simple fruit, sans preservatives, with bits of it blanketed in between the crepe layers was like a warm comforting hug. The Durian Coffee was a riddle we loved solving. The dulcet tones of the durian was pleasantly masked and balanced by the coffee flavour, so even durian haters can enjoy. Finally, the best seller: the Salted Caramel Candy Pecan. With well-defined layers, this the crème de la crème of a cake won’t be dismissed easily from memory.

The idea behind Crepes 21 is to create a dessert loophole. A cake that’s healthier and has lower sugar and fat content, not to mention, incredibly convenient to consume. How? You can get it delivered straight to your door step! A recipe passed down by a French chef to the father of Crepe 21’s founder 20 years ago, this recipe has been perfected throughout the years. Madagascar Vanilla is a signature here, with Espresso Macchiato, and Triple Chocolate being the other two best sellers. You’ll won’t be overwhelmed with its creaminess or sweetness. A tad bit moister than the rest of the mille crepe cakes we tried, this convenient and delectable treat ends our list of best mille crepe cakes in Kuala Lumpur.
